Firefox extension tab suspender9/5/2023 Vertical style tab extensions are essential for tab-junkies. Tabs are easier to read and organize while they’re vertical, and most vertical tab extensions have built-in grouping or “tree” features. Firefox popularized vertical tabs with its Tree Styled Tabs extension, but users of Chrome, Opera, and the Chromium-based Edge browser can use the Tabs Outliner extension. If you want an extension that automatically organizes tabs into groups, then you should check out OneTab. It’s available for both Chromium browsers like Chrome and Firefox, and it turns a mess of tabs into an organized tree-style list with a single click. Without good hardware, these extensions are basically worthless. Browsers are extremely resource-heavy, and a ton of tabs can turn a weak computer into a stuttering mess. RELATED: Tab Overload: 10 Tips For Working With Lots of Browser Tabs If You Want 100 Tabs, You Need Good Hardware First Thankfully, it’s easy to pinpoint hardware problems on a computer, and some extensions can reduce your need to perform expensive (or impossible) hardware upgrades. Generally speaking, your browser’s ability to handle tabs depends on your PC’s CPU and RAM. Those words can strike fear into the heart of any computer user, but they’re actually two of the most approachable ideas in computing.Ī CPU (central processing unit) is basically the brain of a computer. It’s continually crunching numbers and doling out commands to the other components in your PC. If a rogue surgeon decided to replace your brain with an old, bargain-bin brain, then your motor skills and multi-tasking abilities would take a hit. The same goes for your PC a crappy CPU slows everything down. Similarly, a PC’s RAM (random access memory) is like a brain’s short-term memory. It keeps track of what you’re doing in a given moment and makes sure that multi-tasking (running multiple tabs) goes without a hitch. RAM is measured in terms of bytes, and as it turns out, more bytes allow for more multitasking. If you’re a tab junky with a clunky computer, then it may be time to upgrade your CPU or invest in some additional RAM. On most desktop PCs (and some laptops), upgrading your RAM or CPU is quick and easy, especially if you’ve done it in the past. There you may change the suspend time (default 60 seconds), and whether you want pinned tabs or tabs with audio playback suspended as well (default is no).And while computer parts can be a little expensive, a simple hardware upgrade is always cheaper than buying a new PC. You can open the options of the extension in the Firefox add-on manager. The extension is compatible with Firefox 59 or newer, and will suspend tabs that are not active. It is not clear why that is the case and whether it has been pulled by its author or for another reason.Ī suitable alternative for it is Tab Suspender, a Firefox add-on that offers very similar functionality. Update: Suspend Background Tabs is no longer available. Firefox from version 13 on will only load the active tab on startup when session restore is active, and all other open tabs only once they have been selected. The extension should not be confused with Firefox's Tabs on Demand feature. Despite that, it can be an interesting add-on for Firefox users who run many tabs in the browser and notice that Firefox is not as responsive as it should be. I'd like to see an option to whitelist particular domain names so that they won't be suspended as well. The Firefox extension comes with an option to not suspend pinned tabs in the browser. While you could deal with the issue differently, for instance by installing NoScript or a Flash blocker, the solution may not be as comfortable and automatic as what Suspend background tabs has to offer. It is unfortunate that the extension does not cover Flash related contents as well, as they can draw lots of resources even in the background. You will notice on these sites that the messages will only get refreshed once you activate the tab again. The add-on suspends automatic actions by websites, for instance the automatic updating of messages on Twitter or Google Mail, until you activate the tab again. If you limit your tabs to less than ten, you will probably not notice a big difference unless your computer is a bit on the low side resource-wise. This extension works best for users who have dozens of tabs open in the Firefox web browser. Once you have installed the extension in Firefox it works automatically from there on out. The author of the extension notes that it currently won't take action on sites with Flash or media contents, but that a future version may introduce the - in my opinion much needed - feature. The Firefox add-on Suspend Background Tabs tackles the issue by suspending actions in background tabs.
